I’m always struck by the wonderous green when trees first leaf-out in the spring, but this picture also carries a feeling of deep or original intimacy as the three leaves gently rest against each other as they all grow together from the same branch.
Flagstaff Lake
A view of Flagstaff Lake from the Birches Trail peninsula a short walk from the Maine Huts & Trails Flagstaff Lake Hut. This is where days 2 and 3 of the August 7-9 workshop will be held.
Off to the Maine Huts!
Tomorrow is my last class of the semester, and I head off to Poplar Stream Falls Hut and then Flagstaff Lake Hut for Saturday night. I’ll be scouting out good spots for the August Photographic Workshop that Rick Holt and I will be teaching. I hope the steady rain stops and I get some breaks with just overcast. I think I’m bringing an umbrella.
The photo below is totally unrelated to my trip, but I thought I’d post it anyway. It was taken last summer at Popham Beach on a spectacularly foggy morning.
WalkingOnWater
This picture was taken this morning at Popham Beach, Maine — one of the few sandy beaches in Maine. This picture was NOT photoshop-ed. Just a simple levels adjustment.

First Crocus of 2009
The first crocus of spring! It’s been a long winter and it’s nice to feel like the warmer weather is really on the way. It’s truly amazing that a little bulb can produce such a beautiful flower—and for that matter—that the universe exists at all. Reminds me of a quotation by Abraham J. Heschel:
“Just to be is a blessing; just to live is holy”.
Spring Logging
I find the composition and the textures of this image pleasing.Even logs provide photographic possibilities.
Snow & Ice are almost gone.
Finally the snow and ice are almost gone. Only piles of snow remain along roadways and next to houses. This picture is of melting snow and ice along the roadside in Brunswick, Maine.
Life Drawing #2
For some reason, I couldn’t draw at the easel today; but this sketch was at least passable.
Brussel Sprout
Just a snapshot, but it’s amazing to see how the brussel sprout grows in such a complex, folded pattern.
They taste great when pan seared in olive oil with sea salt, pepper and then topped with parmesan cheese.
